Ernesto is in love with Norina, and has refused to marry a "more suitable" woman chosen for him by his uncle, Don Pasquale.
Don Pasquale, a wealthy bachelor, has decided to marry (although has no one particular in mind) and plans to have an heir in order
to punish his rebellious nephew by cutting the young man off without a penny.
Dr. Malatesta, Pasquale's friend and physician, unable to dissuade his friend from marriage, suggests his own beautiful younger
'sister' as a bride, who is currently in a Convent.
The sprightly and extravagant Norina agrees to pose as Malatesta's timid 'sister', Sofronia, and to marry Don Pasquale.
A fake marriage is arranged, quickly followed by the transformation of Sofronia into a spend-thrift wife. Pasquale is
horrified, but eventually the truth is revealed and Pasquale's approval is obtained for Ernesto to get the girl and the money!
