The comic opera L'elizir d'amore is one of the most frequently performed of all Donizetti's operas and is a
delightful tale of lovers' quarrels and reconciliation, magic potions and romantic confusion.
Nemorino, a shy young farmer is in love with Adina, a wealthy landowner, who constantly rejects his offers of love.
Belcore, a dashing and bombastic sergeant, begins to woo Adina, making Nemorino very jealous. He begs Adina to return
his love, but in vain. Dr Dulcamara, a travelling quack, extols the praises of his wonderful potion, guaranteed to cure
all ills. Nemorino acquires a bottle of the Doctor's elixir of love, actually a bottle of Bordeaux, with the instruction
that it will not take effect until the next day (when the Doctor will be long gone). Will the elixir make Adina fall in love with Nemorino or will she marry the dashing sergeant?
