Beautiful, well known music sung in Italian. The action takes place near Nagasaki, Japan in the early part of 20th Century. 

The American Naval Officer Pinkerton is to marry a 15-year-old Japanese bride. She has converted to Christianity for the wedding, but her family reject her for betraying her religion. She adores her new husband.

Pinkerton soon departs with his ship for America. He returns three years later with an American wife, Kate, to collect his unknown child (Trouble). Butterfly kills herself with her father's ceremonial sword.
