SCHOOL FOR FATHERS by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari
A Royal Academy of Music Production
Thursday 1st, Saturday 3rd April 2004 7.15pm
Text by G. Pizzola from Goldoni's Venetian Comedies. English translation by Professor Dent.
The "Fathers" are crusty, pedantic, churlish and ill-natured domestic tyrants who, believing that the woman's place is in the
home, strictly forbid anything that might enliven the tedium of domestic work. It is on this conflict that the plot rests,
needless to say, it is also a triumph of woman's sensibility over their men-folk.
The plot provides ample scope for comic characterisation and for deft evocation of the 18th century Venetian setting.
Based on a famous comedy by Carlo Goldoni, this opera is technically modern (composed in 1906), and was premiered in the
UK in 1946 to great success, it is widely considered to be Wolf-Ferrari's finest comic opera.
