Set during a Vienna Congress, Count Zedlau, Viennese ambassador of Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz, is trying to balance his amorous
involvements. Up from the country his wife Gabriele arrives at his villa in Dobling, unaware that his ballerina mistress
Franziska is installed there. The Count's valet attempts to protect his master's interests, unaware of the Count's latest
interest in Josef's own girlfriend, the model Pepi. Confusion and humour ensue as identities are deliberately concealed….
Spirit of Vienna was arranged from Strauss dances, such as 'Morning Papers' and 'Artists Life' by Adolf Müller in 1899,
with the permission of Strauss. Set to a libretto by Victor Leon and Leo Stein, the sparkle and brilliance of his melodies,
allied to a lively plot has ensured its lasting popularity.
